Calculators for At-Risk Students

Math teachers are aware of the significance, or lack thereof, with students relying on the use of calculators for performing calculations. One of the benefits for students using calculators, is the ability to engage “At-Risk” math students. I was excited to see one of my students who tested several grade levels below his age actually be engaged in performing calculations with the assistance of a calculator. He remains focused on solving the problem, rather than losing interest due to performing long, tedious, algorithm. His accuracy has improved about 25% at grade level, and he has completed more assignments. I recognize students can use the calculator as a means-to-end without regards to whether or not their answer makes sense. But,if using a calculator keeps a student involved in learning math, and feeling some level of success,it seems those benefits override other concerns.
